Foundations and Application of Literacy (Comps 1 and 2)

  • Course Description: REGISTRATION ONLY Course: ONLY participants who have NOT completed Comps 1 and 2 of the Reading Endorsement Program may register.  This course will cover both Competencies 1 and 2 of the Reading Endorsement Program.  Once all requirements are completed, credit will be awarded for each competency separately on the District Transcript.  

    • Competency 1 Description: In this course, participants will develop a substantive understanding of the five components of reading as a process: comprehension, oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, and vocabulary to support student comprehension of complex text. The purpose of this course is to give participants a strong foundation in reading development theory and methods of teaching reading. 
    • Competency 2 Description: Integrating reading and writing is a crucial element in the total literacy program. Included in the course are many strategies to form a solid foundation of literacy development that will lead to reading fluency and writing competency. Using guided reading, literature, and writing to learn strategies, you will explore ways to improve students' reading and writing skills. The purpose of this course is to give you a strong foundation in reading development theory and methods of teaching reading. 


    Audience: Instructional K-12, Current, Full-Time Teacher Teaching Reading Intensive Interventions, serving in the role of a Literacy Coach, or participating in the ACE program. ONLY participants who have NOT completed Comps 1 and 2 of the Reading Endorsement Program may register.   


    Duration: Instructor-led, 8 weeks online via Canvas


    Inservice:  0 points;  60 points for Comp 1 and 60 points for Comp 2 will be awarded upon completion of this course. 


    Access to Students: No


    Course Requirements: To complete this course successfully and receive in-service points, participants must adhere to all course requirements posted on the Code of Online Ethics. All coursework must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person. 

    Prerequisites: Participants must possess the following computer skills and software to participate in this course: 1) an understanding of your computer’s operating system and software, 2) the ability to access the Internet and knowledge of Internet search techniques, and 3) the ability to download and install files from the Internet an up-to-date antivirus software package. 

    To receive the inservice points, all course requirements must be completed independently by the participant and not plagiarized from any other source or person.
