    Thomas Moncilovich Thomas Moncilovich
    Sheridan Technical College

Thomas Moncilovich has a philosophy: Facilitate student registration for Career and Technical Education programs and provide them with the best instruction and newest industry technology, so that students will have an advantage when entering the workforce. Through Moncilovich’s leadership, Broward County Public Schools has realized several significant innovations for Sheridan Technical.

In 2014, Moncilovich launched a first in the nation idea. He oversaw the design and construction of a Mobile Auto Service Technician training lab. The NASCAR-type trailer houses all of the equipment necessary in a brick and mortar automotive classroom, but in a mobile trailer that can be taken to any remote campus or location for online automotive students, instructional lectures and competency demonstrations. The mobile lab makes it possible to offer online automotive service programs without the $100,000 cost of a traditional lab/classroom.

Moncilovich’s devotion to students, workforce education and institutional advancement is evident. His personal philosophy continues to fuel his passion and deep belief in the power of higher education and building careers.

Her approach is student-centered and dedicated to students who, like herself, may struggle academically without the right supports for their learning.

Reed feels that motivating students takes teamwork. She focuses her efforts on bringing much needed training to teachers, and three years ago created a professional learning community that addressed the Florida Standards (then Common Core), writing, and ACT/SAT prep, as well as the sharing of best practices among three neighboring high schools.

    Vivian Suarez Vivian Suarez
    Charles W. Flanagan High School

Vivian Suarez became an educator 22 years ago because she wanted to leave an imprint on the world. She has been doing so since the first day she entered the classroom as a Language Arts and ESOL teacher. In her early years, she primarily worked with struggling readers and English Language Learners, the groups from which many teachers shied away. For the past six years, she has utilized her role as Assistant Principal to improve the academic climate at Flanagan High.

Upon noticing the decrease in overall student reading scores at Flanagan High, Suarez enacted two initiatives, which reversed the downward spiral in scores. With the full support of her principal and peers, she selected and trained teachers and hand-developed a specified schedule for more than 1,500 students. Through this program, Flanagan High increased student learning gains in reading from 48% to 62.4% in one year. Today, the school’s graduation rate for Hispanics, African-Americans and English Language Learners is among the highest in the District.
