2017 School Related/District Employee of the Year Finalists

  • The School-Related/District Employee of the Year Award recognizes outstanding non-instructional support personnel for the significant contributions to our schools and communities. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in the performance of their jobs, thereby earning the respect and admiration of students, teachers, administrators, co-workers and parents.

    In her 22 years of service to BCPS, Teresa Basilone has never lost the enthusiasm, devotion and passion that she brings to work each day. In her current role as office manager/confidential secretary, she takes on numerous responsibilities. A few of these include fundraising, community outreach and advocating for her school’s students and families. “This honor stirs feelings of immense pride and appreciation, and serves as a sign that my actions continue to fall in line with my ideals and principles,” said Basilone.  A caring and encouraging mentor, she provides hands-on assistance to help students with whatever they need. “Ms. Basilone tackles everything that comes to her with dedication and a smile,” said Principal Ty Thompson.

    Terri Cianelli is a team motivator who finds ways to maximize the talents and skills of her school’s clerical staff. Under her leadership, the clerical team provides an organized, customer-friendly environment to support teachers’ daily lesson plans and enhance students’ learning experiences. Cianelli is an excellent communicator who takes time to share information and resources with others, and helps parents, teachers and staff with complicated processes and procedures. She is a dynamic professional who goes above and beyond expectations in every task performed. “Ms. Cianelli takes great initiative and does not hesitate to wear any hat that is necessary to service any parent, teacher or students,” said Principal Kathryn Marlow.

    Oshekia Day maintains a pleasant attitude, a great sense of humor and a positive outlook that has gained her the respect of her peers and supervisors. “I have become an agent of change who’s willing and able to take the lead on various projects,” said Day.  No task is too big or too small. She is a proactive team member who looks and thinks ahead to anticipate outcomes in preparing for department projects and activities. “Ms. Day is a leader among our staff and continues to go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of everyone she meets,” said her director, David L. Watkins, Equity & Academic Attainment Department.

    More than 10 years ago, Denise Loglia began volunteering in BCPS. It was her loving and caring attitude, as well as her professionalism, that opened doors for her to become an employee and make her mark as a valued and trusted resource. “She exceeds expectations when it comes to her commitment and dedication,” said Principal Diane Eagan. She has strong work ethics, focuses on the details, and takes the initiative to provide solutions to any issue. Loglia is always looking for ways to streamline procedures and bring the best customer service to students, teachers and parents.

    Tracy-Ann Smith is an innovative office manager who actively promotes and engages others in new projects and initiatives. Her supportive spirit has played a major role in the success of numerous new programs at her school. Smith also mentors and encourages students to become college and career ready. She often helps and guides parents through complicated processes to ensure their knowledge and understanding. “Ms. Smith endeavors to help students have success in whatever it is they will do next,” said Principal James F. Griffin.  “She works hard to ensure our students are given everything they need to succeed.”

    Suzanne Specht facilitates the enrollment process for students and parents at her school with a warm smile and welcome. She also coordinates the school’s volunteers and leads activities that support teachers’ lessons and assignments. Principal Julie Gittelman appreciates Specht’s willingness to offer assistance to others. “She has excellent relationships with everyone she comes into contact with, and is respected by her colleagues, students and parents for her hard work and dedication,” said Principal Gittleman.
