Independent Reading

  • Reading independently helps your child build confidence and support the development of reading skills. To better assist you with this process, meet with your child's teacher to find out the most recent running record measurement of your child’s independent reading level. Then, click on the leveled tile that represents your child's level to see a sample selection of books that your child can read. It is important to know that the more your child reads and learns, their independent levels will increase over time. We encourage parents to support their child's reading development by:

    • Spending time reading to your child and talking about books
    • Spending time listening to your child read
    • Giving books as gifts for holidays, birthdays, surprises or anytime
    • Visiting your local library and getting a library card
