IB (International Baccalaureate)

  • International Baccalaureate (IB) exams will be administered on school sites.  Please know that BCPS prioritizes each child’s safety by sanitizing, physical distancing, and requiring the wearing of masks during tests, on buses, and throughout the day. As a district we certainly recognize the challenges posed by our current environment, but we continue to partner with IBInternational and the school to navigate our new normal.

As such, IB has also worked with school district to created adaptations and accommodations for the May 2021 session. As a point of clarification, dual or non-exam route was developed for those schools that are still impacted by mandated closures or restrictions.  Broward County Public Schools does not fall into this category of not being able to sit for exams because of closure or restrictions.  Adaptations balance disruptions to teaching and learning while maintaining the quality, validity, and reliability of the IB Diploma Program experience.  Adaptations consist of a range of approaches including:

    • Amendments to specific assessment components and requirements
    • Removal of assessment components or requirements
    • The use of in-examination mitigation
On January 6, 2021 ibo.org issued the following statement, "IB is committed to supporting our schools through this disruption and last year we introduced a range of changes to our assessments and examinations to address the loss of teaching due to Covid, focusing as much as was possible on flexibility and fairness in preparation for the May 2021 session."

IB Teachers have adjusted their instruction based on these adaptations and accommodations since the beginning of the 2020-21 school year.

IB does recognizes that there may be individual circumstances that we will need to deal with as we would in any exam session.  However, it is imperative that parents and students understand that a student's failure to sit for a scheduled May session will require documented proof of "adverse circumstances" per IB established policies.  Any decision rendered in an individual student's appeal is dependent on IB International not the school.

BCPS is here to work with your school in supporting your educational and social-emotional needs. Your school's IB Coordinator is ready to work with you to discuss any possible options and scenarios so you can make informed decisions.

We stand ready to support all our students to ensure their success.
