Frequently Asked Questions

  • EARLY LEARNING

  • When will I find out my status?

You can check the status of your child's application by logging into your account on the 2022-2023 BCPS - VPK Parent Portal

  • What is Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK)?

The Florida VPK Program is a state-funded program designed to prepare four-year-olds for kindergarten and build the foundation for their educational success. The program allows a parent to enroll his or her eligible child (four years old by September 1 and residing in Florida) in a FREE VPK program of their choice. The program is voluntary for children and providers. In Broward County Public Schools, the free VPK program is combined with additional hours called, “Enrichment.” The combined VPK and Enrichment hours are combined to create a full school day program. At some schools, the full day is free and at others, the enrichment portion of the day is tuition supported.

  • When is my child eligible for the VPK program?

A child must be 4 years of age on or before September 1 of the program year, and reside in Florida to participate in the VPK program.

  • How do I apply for the BCPS VPK Program?

Step 1. Apply for your child’s VPK Certificate of Eligibility online via the State of Florida - Family Portal website.

    • Proof of residence and proof of age must be uploaded into the State’s Family Portal.
    • A VPK Certificate of Eligibility will be sent via email from the State.

Step 2. Create an account on the  2022-2023 BCPS - VPK Parent Portal  to create your child’s BCPS – VPK application.

    • Note: You must be a Broward resident to qualify for a BCPS – VPK program.

Step 3. Log back into the 2022-2023 BCPS - VPK Parent Portal to check the status of your application and see any needed documents or next steps.

    • Note: Submission of a BCPS – VPK application does not guarantee selection.

  • How is my child selected for the BCPS VPK program?

    • VPK/Enrichment (Title I Supported) Selection Process – This process is used to select Broward residents that are applying for the full day, free VPK/Enrichment class supported by State-funded VPK and Federally-funded Title I. It involves using multiple, education-related, objective criteria for selection of students. Students are selected based upon academic needs using the information you provide through the 2022-2023 BCPS - VPK Parent Portal  online application. Priority is given to students living within the school’s attendance boundary.
    • VPK/Enrichment (Tuition Supported) Process – This process is used to select students that are applying for the full or half-day, VPK/Enrichment (Tuition Supported) classes offered at selected BCPS schools. There are limited seats for parents interested in a free, 3-hour, VPK-only class and seats for families interested in a full day, VPK/Enrichment tuition-supported program. Students are selected based upon District priority and random selection. Priority is given to students living within the school’s attendance boundary.

  • How much does it cost to enroll in a VPK program?

The VPK portion of the BCPS VPK/Enrichment program is FREE for eligible children, regardless of family income. Registration and tuition fees are not permitted for the free, 3-hour VPK portion of the day.  However, registration and tuition fees are permitted for the non-VPK (i.e. ‘Enrichment’) portion of the day.

  • Will the VPK program provide transportation?

BCPS does not provide transportation for VPK students. Florida law specifies that each parent is responsible for the transportation of his or her child to and from the VPK program. Some VPK providers may offer transportation services, and families are encouraged to explore these options before choosing a VPK provider.

  • Does selection for the BCPS – VPK program guarantee that my child will go to the same school for Kindergarten the following year?

Selection for a Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program at a school does not guarantee placement for Kindergarten at the same school. If your child is selected or offered a seat in a BCPS - Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) class that is not your boundary school, you must apply for and receive a reassignment in order for your child to attend Kindergarten at the same school. To learn about the reassignment process, please visit the School Choice website.
