  • Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) – Summer Information

    The Early Childhood Education Department (ECE) hosts the District’s Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Program, a State funded program that offers free instruction to Florida four-year old's. Under Florida legislation, VPK offers two programs for students during the summer. Summer VPK and VPK Summer Bridge.


  • Summer VPK

    The Summer Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program is a free educational program in Florida designed to prepare eligible children for kindergarten. It focuses on enhancing early literacy, math, language, and social skills to ensure that children are ready for kindergarten. Summer VPK runs in the summer months for 30 instructional days with a total of 300 instructional hours. The Summer VPK program is especially beneficial for children who may have missed the school-year VPK program, offering them a structured learning experience to develop key skills for kindergarten readiness.

    VPK Summer Bridge

    The Florida Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Summer Bridge Program is a state initiative designed to support children who may need additional assistance in developing essential skills before entering kindergarten. This program emphasizes emergent literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading. VPK Summer Bridge runs June to July for 24 instructional days with a total of 100 instructional hours (4 hours per day). Participating in the VPK Summer Bridge Program can significantly enhance a child's readiness for kindergarten, ensuring they have the foundational skills necessary for academic success.

    The VPK Summer Bridge program is specially designed for children who participated in a VPK program (either private or public) and scored below the 10th percentile on the third progress monitoring assessment (PM3). Additionally, children with a non-participation status of "assessment inappropriate," "failed practice," or "non-English speaker" on PM3 qualify for the program.

  • Who is eligible for Summer VPK?

    The Summer VPK program is specially designed for children who are turning 5 years old by September 1st of the current year, who have NOT previously attended a VPK program. Children enrolling in the Summer VPK program should have a valid VPK certificate.

  • Where will Summer VPK take place?

    The 2025 Summer VPK will be offered at two BCPS school locations.

  • What are the dates for 2025 Summer VPK?

    The 2025 Summer VPK program will take place from Monday, June 9th to Thursday, July 31st (Monday-Thursday weekly). BCPS 2025 Summer VPK school hours for students will be 7:30 a.m. – 5:15 p.m. There will be no school on Thursday, June 19th.

  • What are the dates for 2025 VPK Summer Bridge?

    The 2025 VPK Summer Bridge program take place from Monday, June 16th to Tuesday, July 29th. This program will include 4 instructional hours per day (hours vary by school location). There will be no school on Thursday, June 19th.

  • How old does my child have to be to apply for the VPK - Summer program?

    A child must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st of the current year. 

  • How do I apply for VPK - Summer?

    Visit https://www.browardschools.com/vpkapplication and scroll down to the VPK – Summer program you are applying for (i.e., Summer VPK or VPK Summer Bridge).

  • How do I obtain a VPK certificate? (this is the first step in applying for Summer VPK with BCPS)

    Step 1. Apply for your child’s VPK Certificate of Eligibility online via the State of Florida - Family Portal website.

  • If I already applied for my VPK certificate, has my child been accepted to VPK at Broward Schools?

    No, after obtaining your VPK certificate from the Family Portal website, please complete Step 2 - create an account with the BCPS - VPK Parent Portal. Please visit the following link for more information on how to apply to VPK at Broward Schools. https://www.browardschools.com/vpkapplication
