  • Broward County Public schools provides a continuum of services to students who are found eligible for services as a student who is deaf or hard of hearing. Services provided meet the academic needs of students as well as their communication needs outlined in their Individualized Education Plan. n and learning

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Services

    • Students who are eligible for deaf or hard of hearing services must:

      • Demonstrate a hearing loss that affects the student’s ability to participate in the educational process.
      • Demonstrate how the hearing loss affects the student’s development of academic skills, communication skills, or social skills.

      Services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing include (based on individual need):

      • A certified teacher of the Deaf or Hard of Hearing
      • A certified Audiologist
      • Certified Educational Interpreters

      Based on the individual student’s needs, services can be provided in:

      • A general education classroom
      • self contained classroom for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
      • A combination of general education classroom and a self contained classroom

      Students who are deaf or hard of hearing can be instructed in the following ways:

      • Auditory/Oral Instruction – teaches students to develop hearing and speaking skills to develop spoken language for communication and learning
      • Total Communication – teaches students to develop hearing, speaking, communication skills using sign language for communicatio

     

  • Audiologists

    Educational Audiologists deliver a full spectrum of hearing services to all children in educational settings. Audiologists are trained to diagnose, manage and treat hearing issues in children. Educational audiologists are members of the school multidisciplinary team who facilitate listening, learning and communication access via specialized assessments; monitor personal hearing instruments; recommend, fit and manage hearing assistance technology; provide and recommend support services and resources; and advocate on behalf of the students.

  • Educational Interpreters

    Educational interpreters provide communication access to students who are deaf or hard of hearing by faithfully and accurately representing the classroom instruction, teacher/student dialogue, and relevant sound information in the mode of communication used by the student.

  • Teachers of the Deaf

    Teachers of the Deaf provide the following services:

    • assessing students’ pre-academic/academic achievement, making recommendations for academic goals and objectives for the IEP, and providing academic instruction to the students
    • assessing students’ language and communication skills, recommending goals and objectives for language/ communication skills for the IEP, and providing instruction for language and communication skills to the students (may work in conjunction with the speech/ language pathologist and/or educational audiologist)
    • make subject matter accessible to students who are deaf or hard of hearing
    • teaching social-emotional, self-determination and self-advocacy
    • fostering development of auditory skills and maximizing amplification use (when appropriate)
    • assisting in the appropriate placement of students
    • collaborating with general education teachers and educational interpreters regarding the needs of students when in general education classes.
