May Haitian Heritage Month

Broward Schools celebrates Haitian Heritage Month in May, and Haitian Flag Day on May 18th. Both are celebrations of Haitian heritage and culture. We encourage the use of Haitian/Haitian-American curriculum to help teachers incorporate diversity and different perspectives of history and culture into the existing curriculum, and instill a sense of pride in the Haitian students who represent approximately 10% of our student population. Haitian Heritage Month was first recognized in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1998 and can include events that celebrate Haitian culture, arts, music and cuisine.
